Pearl Buck wrote this about and for her father, who was a missionary in China, and had a life and personality worth recording. For all his western - assumed superior - being and life he was able to see China for what worth it was and how western meddling was damaging it, and he was able to appreciate the country and culture he was living in.
Perhaps this is the book that gives the story of Chinese "rice christians", poor Chinese who converted during famine times because they were promised rice when they converted.
The Chinese, however, were much smarter - and not only did they go around "converting" themselves in different churches in the neighbourhood in different villages every day, they even told the story quite openly, laughing about it.
