Notes from a Small Island; by Bill Bryson.

This was a most delightful discovery.

We were living in Germany at the time, having lived long in US and being familiar with UK, and as it turned out, living there soon after.

So many little details of this were familiar and those that were not were a delight to read about.

Even within our family one story was almost re-enacted when I told about the counterpane and everyone else had a blank face - they had no idea what it meant, while my mother had always used the term and so we had known it all along, casually and taken it for granted.
