Polzunkov, by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

It begins as a description of someone aware of being laughed at by everybody, for no reason, and the author or protagonist seeing him not only as dressed more perfectly, but, in a flash of intuition, also suddenly as a man more honest and generous than everyone else around.

Subsequently Polzunikov relates how a crooked boss took advantage of him, using every wile and tool including his daughter who Polzunikov was in love with, and an emotional blackmail.
