The title of the book has two inaccuracies amounting to lies, to begin with.
First and foremost, they are NOT Indian. The European migrants knew this, Columbus knew this, and for sake of keeping a falsehood so Columbus would not risk his reputation or lose his head the sailors working with him who all knew this were sworn to say the opposite. Everyone knew Columbus had not reached India, and everyone nevertheless insists on calling the natives of western continent "Indian", perpetrating a lie, not merely an inaccuracy.
This is doubly racist, since it deprives the said natives of their own identity to begin with, and also no one has asked India if there is any connection whatsoever between the people that lived in a land across the world and India (yes, of ancient trade and exchange of skills, but not populations or identity). The falsehood dumps all non European non African non Oriental non Islamic people into one basket, a huge racism of an assumed hierarchy and separating the high and the low and the others nowhere. It is stupid, racist, ignorant, false, and high time it stopped. High time the natives of the western continent were able to assume their own identity. Unless they wished to claim Indian ancestry and to return to India, that is. Unlikely, since if anything they are connected to Siberia and Mongolia and Pacific islands, which makes far more sense.
Which brings one to another racist imposition of a name, that of the continent. Vespucci Amerigo was one of the sailors who supposedly discovered the continent, and to impose his name on the continent, not even asking a native what they called their land, is supreme racism. America is a racist term by definition.
And then, to belatedly allow that the natives "contributed" to US and "transformed the world" - hellow, they did not massacre all newly arriving migrants, in fact they helped the migrants settle like all good neighbours do, and so they in fact are the founding stone of the edifice in every way! That is only in the north, while in the southern and central parts the migrants were plundering marauders who destroyed everything precious in name of faith. "They had astronomy, architecture, arts, crafts; European migrants had guns and gunpowder" is perhaps a rephrasing of the famous assessing of the encounter, but pretty good to give the idea.
Of course they were givers! They had a superior system in terms of environment as well, which is only recognised now that the fear of global warming and fear about a lack of future for humanity has made some - not all - people do a double take! In addition to what others failed to recognise, they also had potato and tomato and chillies and chocolate, and where in the world can people do without every one of these indeed! Germans post wwi survived on potato as do poor in many a societies even now.
For that matter, the huge (and mostly unnecessary - who ever died or fell sick for lack of face paint?) cosmetic industry of west derived its origin and ideology from an oriental culture of China and Japan where faces of Geishas and upper class women were painted masks, which got copied to Europe for fashion, while the system of administrative examinations and system generally was copied by British and integrated into their own structure of governance.
A good amount of vocabulary in English is borrowed from Arabic, Persian and India, while Latin and Greek are younger siblings if not daughters of Sanskrt (and therefore the ease of India in European languages beginning with English), realised and perforce admitted by Europe long before the present era of denial.
And of course Africa, with her stolen raw materials (like other colonised lands) and
kidnapped men and women (unlike other lands) that made US prosper before the civil war dismantled the slavery and dislocated the now free ex-slaves once again, with equality still a faraway goal and animosity of ex-slavers growing to high pitch. Solution? Liberia? Workers work for food and return, much like Germans would like Turks and others to do, is the pleasure of pale colour races?
Gratitude at the very least is way past due. Acknowledgement likewise.
Yes, the world gave and Europe received and forgot to say thank you. These belated acknowledgements are better than never, and what next? An equal status? For the givers who received only victimisation in return?

Prior to the horrors exposed post wwii that were committed in the name of of a superior race and culture, it was not only assumed that the two were inextricably joined at the pale colours level but widely so practiced by the said pale colour populace in the world. Post the exposure of the logically correct (but horror at a humanitarian level of concerns of course) extreme of this practice in the camps run by nazis, this theory of race and culture superiority fell into a ditch of disrepute, where it was taboo to speak of this but only acceptable to attack a practice of this in the world when the practitioners were not actually of the races assumed superior due to the said pale set of colours.
A double standard emerged where a European ancestry was silently assumed to be superior in any case and was given a better treatment of every sort and at every level in the world, but the rest of the world was lumped together and admonished, wherever possible, about such assumptions and practices. Since the phrase "wherever possible" is of key importance here, a hierarchy emerged silently, with pale colours European ancestry at the top; Oriental (Chinese, Japanese chiefly) and Mid-oriental (Mediterraenean, west Asian, Central Asian - mainly Islamic) but also others (southeast Europe was low in world hierarchy, west and north being above) at the undefined middle, Africa excluding Egypt and other north African parts undoubtedly at the lowest rung, regions such as southeast Asia or Pacific islands or Caribbeans or natives of Americas and most Latin Americans either forgotten or used and forgotten - and India of course at the receiving end of an ever battering ram of accusations of inequality in various names, chiefly due a strong resistance to conversion without accompanying violence of the sort that would erupt if a conversionist faith attempts such practices and escalations of conversion in a land where another conversionist faith is the rule with options really not allowed.
During the era that this was happening, much of other parallel theory and practices came up, such as lack of rigour in education in name of liberal freedom with values scrapped in name of ideals of individual but really no real progress for individual student, resulting inevitably in low levels of literacy and accomplishments in public schools through US and a low regard for teachers, which in turn resulted in an exodus of intelligent and well read, well educated men and women from teaching profession unless they could quickly get a tenure in a university - well, who in their right minds would like to be at the receiving end of a battering ram of accusations and disrespect and occasional violence after giving a life to caring for young of other people unless they lacked any opportunity elsewhere!
All this did nothing to improve a racial equality, while the lowering of requirements in schools merely resulted in a bullies rule until it came to job market. Culture became a dubious word best limited to ballet, opera, classical music et al, playground of rich and hobby of intelligentsia, while masses stayed away happily and watched sports on television (tickets were easier for corporates and other rich) while drinking beer and eating chips and ordering more food from the kitchen as wives fumed silently - they were not allowed to join the male buddies on the couch as often as not, since loosening of discipline made a buddy goggling a wife possible without reprimand for him and sometimes a bad end for the wife.
Naturally, obesity followed resulting in a good thing for economy what with dieting industry, pills and so forth, surgery, gyms and spas to make up for the travails, a higher end for the well to do and other facilities for those that could afford that much. Walking to the market to shop has been not merely unfashionable but physically nearly impossible in US and increasingly elsewhere too last half a century or so. Some places have a pharmacy one can walk to, others not even that, so emergencies require driving as well. Unless one is ok with far more expensive alternatives.
While all this proliferated with the world generally aping cultures of races and nations of European ancestry, the politically correct stance was to give a mouthing to environment being all theory of culture and progress and opportunity, while in reality most downtrodden people of whatever race had little access to these vehicles of rising above poverty and other ills of the sort - and no possiblity was envisioned where culture, education, hygiene, knowledge et al were not necessarily associated to an abundance of all latest toys sold for profit, although it was right before everyone's eyes blinkered shut tightly.

Truth is, the two factors of genome and environment do not battle necessarily, they co-operate as well, and affect one another in striving for evolution. Thus children of intelligent parents do inherit intelligence to varying degrees - since genome is complex and a guarantee would require a high level of intelligence in all relatives of ancestors of the baby - but an intelligent and educated mother enhances the level of intelligence of the child of an intelligent and educated father. This inheritance is true of many traits that can be learned in environment as well, such as hygiene practices or aspiration to knowledge.
But a confusion is made when race and culture or other facets of human achievement are linked in that it is assumed that such a link is necessarily racist, and this is due to the fact that an assumption of superiority of pale colouring races persists as much as one of superiority of European ancestry. This assumption is due to the simple fact of everyone being able to see a set of colouring inherited - blue or green eyes, red or yellow hair, pink or sallow or pale cheeks - while a perceived intelligence arouses animosity of the most vicious sort unless accompanied by the right set of colours and gender, preferably accompanied by European ancestry as well.
As a community interacts they swap and share genes, traits, habits, food, hygiene, information, likes and dislikes, knowledge, and more - forming a race simultaneously with an interlinked set of intangibles we name culture, and the two are interlinked. What is not seem immediately is that a visible similarity of two people does not immediately make for a similar level of intelligence or culture, since other factors affect everything as well, and there are different communities within every given race, sometimes stratified by money-defined class as in US, sometimes by social stratification by caste as in Europe (royalty, aristocracy, landed gentry, traders, professionals ...), and sometimes by a multitude of complex factors including a differently defined caste (based on ancestral set of professions and work, rather than monarch bestowed titles and lands as in Europe). And within a community which is usually a part of a race and not whole of it, culture and intelligence and other traits are as similar as they might be within a set of relatives gathered at a wedding.
Yes, there is a link - and yes, it is all affected by environment and vice versa as well, and genome is as affected by learning as vice versa - and it is not about pale colours up, monochrome down, sepia in between, with almond eyes an exotic over the next hill level. It is far more complex than that.
And this is true of gap across gender as well. Mothers affect children positively and daughters specially, and infant daughters of educated mother and an aspiring grandmother are known to be far more attached to books and learning and capable of dealing with electric wires than daughters of conventional mothers, while an ease about gender roles in environment and ancestry (the two are interlinked in a family of course) is known to have produced much beloved sons who are far more interested in playing with dolls than their sisters with storytelling of high complexity, going on to not literature for a career necessarily but to electrical engineering and finance.
Give the children all you can, let them have all you can of the good things others around can provide by example and teaching, and you help cultural evolution of humanity within your own little circle of race, community, family. It is only a little different from money - those that have money may lose it fast but culture slowly, and those that aspire to have either or both can, with generations doing better than ancestors. That is evolution.

But then with Anglican church emerged a class that was both poor and educated, namely the Vicar's family, including daughters, who had to be exemplery in every way - hygiene, learning, clean clothes - and cultured as well. This might partially or more answer the question of what knowledge was taken from Egypt in Judaic tradition. Rabbit Proof Fence: The True Story of One of the Greatest Escapes of All Time: by Doris Pilkington.
Europe went on exploration of the world for various gains - spices needed to preserve food for life in Europe before refrigeration, so the traders from China to Arabia that brought the goods need not be paid their due and Europe could have the gold, the spices, the jewels, whatever the lands offered. One perhaps unforeseen gain was discovery of lands unknown to most of Europe - Nordic men, especially fishermen, of course did go west in search of catch and did not tell everyone about their finds since it was a matter of competitive making a living, but not only they had reached Iceland and Greenland, they arrived in continent further west and called it Vinland, and they even had colonised as far south as slightly west of Boston where their proof of being can be seen in the brick tower that remains.
The discovery of new lands was greatest in the sense of giving those nations that were leading in the discovery and settling of the lands a huge lebensraum, since any opposition to their taking over the lands was brutally as well as with use of machiavellian skills and worse - recall the natives given infected blankets around the formation time of US.
Australia, with even the land of the name wiped out and changed to suit Europe just as was done with America, was less of a battle with natives in settling the land
with European, then mostly British, and mostly convicts to begin with. But this did not earn any friendship or gratitude from the settlers for the natives, and they were seen as primitive (they are still called aboriginal rather than native Australians) creatures to be used for European settlers like animals domestic and farm variety are. There is no other way to see the story of this book.
There was no slavery as such, no buying and selling, only a catching and using much like that of wild animals for domestic use. And inevitably part of this usage was that of native women by settler men. It was not marriage, not even love affair, just a use of helpless women by men with power, for convenience. Disgusting behaviour from the said men in power.
The children from this contact were seen to be not quite so dark and that is where the trouble began in Australia for the natives - unlike their counterparts in continent across the Pacific where slavery was the rule and a drop of slave or even emancipated free slave blood still counts to have a person being called black, no matter how white they look - in Australia it was seen that breeding of natives with settlers results in washing colour out, and this was seen as a desirable objective, to be enforced with physical force and legal and more.
So native half blood children were separated from their mothers and their roots, all caring and identity, and put in residential facilities where European nuns and legal authorities replaced their native elders, requiring them to forget their identity and learn to be European. Not that this would give them an equal or half equal status, but that then they were to work for settlers in towns (natives to be shunted off to remote farmlands or out completely) and to be expected to breed with Europeans by choice of latter. The breeding part was intended for half blood girls, work for both genders.
This story is of a tremendous courage of three little girls who escaped such a facility after a short while and tracked back, walking the length of the continent north to south, back to their mothers - only, one got waylaid by the lie of a native greedy man who trapped her into being caught. The other two arrived still alive, walking, and united with their mother and grandmother.
The film is impossible not to be affected by, the visuals bringing it all to one, the grief and helplessness of the mothers and daughters as they are separated, the well meaning nuns who are harsh in imposing a "no native dialects" rule, the legal authority officer who inspects the colour of exposed bodies in public, the punishment shaving of head of a girl that dares to talk to a native boy, the courage and cunning of the three girls in escaping and walking back across the country, the tracker who accompanies the policemen on search and refrains from informing how close they might be, the kind European woman who gives them food and clothes and informs them about the rabbit proof fence that helps them get back and the European man out in the wilderness who sets them straight about there being two fences and the short cut to the right one.

The separation of children from mothers, children born of forced contact with settler males, continued until 1974. Later the government apologised, but it might have helped a bit more if they - the aptly named Stolen Generations - had been reunited with what relatives could be found. If record of those deprived mothers were kept, that is.
The discovery of new lands was greatest in the sense of giving those nations that were leading in the discovery and settling of the lands a huge lebensraum, since any opposition to their taking over the lands was brutally as well as with use of machiavellian skills and worse - recall the natives given infected blankets around the formation time of US.
Australia, with even the land of the name wiped out and changed to suit Europe just as was done with America, was less of a battle with natives in settling the land
with European, then mostly British, and mostly convicts to begin with. But this did not earn any friendship or gratitude from the settlers for the natives, and they were seen as primitive (they are still called aboriginal rather than native Australians) creatures to be used for European settlers like animals domestic and farm variety are. There is no other way to see the story of this book.
There was no slavery as such, no buying and selling, only a catching and using much like that of wild animals for domestic use. And inevitably part of this usage was that of native women by settler men. It was not marriage, not even love affair, just a use of helpless women by men with power, for convenience. Disgusting behaviour from the said men in power.
The children from this contact were seen to be not quite so dark and that is where the trouble began in Australia for the natives - unlike their counterparts in continent across the Pacific where slavery was the rule and a drop of slave or even emancipated free slave blood still counts to have a person being called black, no matter how white they look - in Australia it was seen that breeding of natives with settlers results in washing colour out, and this was seen as a desirable objective, to be enforced with physical force and legal and more.
So native half blood children were separated from their mothers and their roots, all caring and identity, and put in residential facilities where European nuns and legal authorities replaced their native elders, requiring them to forget their identity and learn to be European. Not that this would give them an equal or half equal status, but that then they were to work for settlers in towns (natives to be shunted off to remote farmlands or out completely) and to be expected to breed with Europeans by choice of latter. The breeding part was intended for half blood girls, work for both genders.
This story is of a tremendous courage of three little girls who escaped such a facility after a short while and tracked back, walking the length of the continent north to south, back to their mothers - only, one got waylaid by the lie of a native greedy man who trapped her into being caught. The other two arrived still alive, walking, and united with their mother and grandmother.
The film is impossible not to be affected by, the visuals bringing it all to one, the grief and helplessness of the mothers and daughters as they are separated, the well meaning nuns who are harsh in imposing a "no native dialects" rule, the legal authority officer who inspects the colour of exposed bodies in public, the punishment shaving of head of a girl that dares to talk to a native boy, the courage and cunning of the three girls in escaping and walking back across the country, the tracker who accompanies the policemen on search and refrains from informing how close they might be, the kind European woman who gives them food and clothes and informs them about the rabbit proof fence that helps them get back and the European man out in the wilderness who sets them straight about there being two fences and the short cut to the right one.

Why America Slept: The Failure to Prevent 9/11 : by Gerald Posner.
It ought to be interesting to read more on the subject - there was Moore's Fahrenheit 911 (film and book), giving details about various factors of the whole event pointing to suspicious circumstances, to say the very least; and then there was an information channel documentary dramatised with actors to tell the story of how Ahamadshah Massoud, the Lion of Panjshir who had been fighting the Taliban, had warned US and asked for help. He knew he would be assasinated by them and had said, when this does take place, it would be a matter of days until a major attack on US takes place. He was blown up on september 9th, and barely two days later came the attack on US.

It is always more comforting to find a way out of having to fight, especially when the war is not for immediately perceived gains. With a Vietnam still fresh in memory, and the overall reluctance of the US public and corporate powers alike to get involved in any matters where such gains or comforts, luxuries, perceived needs of US people are not involved (recall the extreme reluctance of US to get in both the world wars no matter how necessary), it is tempting to make a truce and try a sharing of the world - you guys rule this and this, the other guy takes that and that, US keeps what remains.
But what if this truce is never enough and salami tactics (read Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister) is what the other guy is using, along with a strategy following that of totalitarian regimes (given explicitly in Zbiegniew Brzezinski's Permanent Purge) generally followed in restricted regions but very well applicable to the whole world when a totalitarian regime would impose itself on the whole world and destroy civilisation as we know it.
Far fetched this is not - recall that Neville Chamberlain, the then prime minister of England, (which means UK, Great Britain, British Empire, the whole kit and caboodle) returned back from his peace talks triumphant, having (along with the French leader) browbeaten Czechoslovakia to accept being invaded in the interest of peace for England and France and the world. Or so he thought, not having read or not having taken seriously the opponents's declaration of intentions clearly stated in his book (still sold everywhere except in Germany where it is illegal).
So, all in all, what if this pretty and comfortable scenario is not entirely correct? What if, while most of Muslims want peace (in their way and on their terms, which amounts to not tolerating "other" people around, not allowing "other" faiths to exist around, forcing women in the two out of three nazi kkk's - no kirche, only kinder and küche, justifying killing of those that they don't want around in name of faith, ...), the Taliban and Al Qaeda and so forth merely use any and every excuse to get whatever young males they can find to join for jihad, and no matter what you do it is a never ending story?
For, that is very likely to be the realistic scenario. It is all very well going on about poor Pakistanis, but the nation received several billion dollars of free aid apart from arms, all unaccounted for (unless attacking India in a proxy war with terrorists trained and supplied with agenda, transport and arms, with second to second instructions about next minute strategy on cell phones from Pakistan high up, takes care of accounting), so someone has to ask why the people are so poor Pakistan has to go on insisting on more aid at every opportunity for its poor.
The people are poor due to the military and the mostly west Punjab based power nexus has eaten up the moolah which leaves nothing for the poor and if that is to be encouraged do go on supplying them with "aid", taxpayers of US!
But ultimately you have to remember that being Gandhian - loving your enemy and giving in to each and all demands hoping they would wake up the conscience of the opponent - works only when you are not facing fascist, nazi or similar creeds of totalitarian dictatorship, with unfair rules and no compunctions about lies and fraud, and intentions of taking over the world.
However painful the memory of Vietnam for various reasons, the war did help to contain the spread of communism - or is it pleasant to imagine US surrounded by an ocean of the creed? Soviets survived with makeshift solutions (take Ukraine's harvest, wipe out Ukraine's people, there is more food and less mouths to feed) and this could very well have continued on world scale, but for the strong stance of US in Vietnam.
This is not to say everything was done right in Afghanistan, far from it; or that Iraq occupation must continue at all costs. A fresh look is necessary but it is not what the book - judging from the official description - proposes.
What is needed is to scrap the convenience first method of relying on military dictatorships simply in order to be able to bargain with bad guys - they won't care what they promised and can blackmail you right back, too - while allowing undermining of democracies that are succeeding, undermining them for fear of having other nations with healthy democracy and good economy around in other parts of the world.

I recall talking to a colleague from Carolina about this - I had just visited pars of south and the difference was startling, the confidence in north versus the sullen, expecting nothing, hostile look in the south (not that the confident ones in the north were always polite or happy or well behaved, but confident they certainly were) - and she explained that in north people live separate and don't interact while southerners live mixed racially and they know their (I forget the exact word, did she say black, or negro, what words did I use then, .. the now prevalent African American is relatively new and reminds one that European Americans are supposed to be default Americans however equally migrants, non natives) people across racial barriers.
Later she married someone who said Germany's wwii leader was not as bad as the one that had been in Russia during wwii, since the former had exterminated "other" people and the latter his own, in comparative numbers. I found this shocking enough to turn to her and ask why she had married him (her parents had been anxious to know if he had been the wrong race until they met him). She shrugged, but later assaulted me verbally in public in a disgusting manner.

In Germany often there were angry mutterings by Germans against Turkish residents, with the excuse that they did not speak German. The second generation certainly does, in fact they have never been to Turkey and consider Germany their home, but are nevertheless aware of being seen as non German by others and second class citizens of the nation they have been born and brought up in. The right to citizenship used to be granted by ancestry but not by birth, so a third generation Turkish person was still not a citizen but a Russian of German ancestry who had never visited had a right to claim the citizenship. This was the tiny fact along with the recent migration of a lot of such Germans from Russia that probably had the language teacher assigned to us claim that Germany had most immigrants in Europe.
And as a matter of fraudulent claims I always thought the language teacher stating that Germany had far more immigrants than any other European nation took the bakery, since obviously the top was UK, it is visible, while any different looking person in Germany can feel all eyes on him just as it happens south of Ohio.
Another colleague in Germany, a decent man, was speaking about the Turkish German problem as Germans see it - there were Italian migrant workers but then the economy improved back in Italy and they went back home (I was reminded of Bread And Chocolate, a film we saw in US) but the Turkish migrants who had been invited as needed for labour for the economy were not leaving.
When Germany introduced the Green Card they expected a flood of workers as in US to come boost the economy, but they were told it was unlikely - for the simple reason that the German Green Card is limited in time and has no option of renewal or permanent residence or citizenship, unlike US; and it is unrealistic, inhuman, to expect people to come away from homeland for years, contribute labour, have no relationship with residents, not bring families, not make home in the land where they work, and leave after investing a part of their lives to boost the economy of a stranger land where they have no stake whatsoever ultimately.
This is not that different from the slave labour of southern US and the attitude behind the book. Post emancipation, at least.

At one point the colleague spoke disdainfully of "economic refugees" - Germany has liberal laws accepting any political refugees immediately, housing and feeding them, etc. while they cannot find work and be a part of the new nation as long as their cases are investigated, and a flood of Tamil refugees from Srilanka had Germans muttering about the abuse of their law and close the easy entry for visitors from India (until a few decades ago Indians did not need visa for Germany or UK, perhaps Canada). I pointed out that in fact it was fault of the law - those that arrive officially for work contribute to the economy and pay taxes as well in spite of Germans and not the tax paying visitors being able to avail any financial aid from the state; but a political refugee might very well be what the home country sees as unwanted for good reason, a terrorist. The colleague found this startling thought. After all Khomeini had been a refugee in Paris, I pointed out.

US abhors any thought of sharing products of labour of many except by bargain and contract however unfair, and that is the real problem, not the race of the emancipated slaves or any other workers. But in case of the slaves, they were captured, forced to travel in inhuman circumstances, sold against their will by strangers to strangers, and forced to work on places they had no stake in. The problem is the slavery imposed on them and their ancestors, and the solution is a greater share of the communal goodies - education, medicine, opportunities, jobs, et al. It is only fair.

Arctic Grail: The Quest For The Northwest Passage And The Pole, 1818 - 1909 : by Pierre Berton.
The beautiful photograph of Arctic ocean on the cover makes one wish one was there, and the description makes one wish one could get the book immediately, or even better, that it was a DVD with extensive arctic scenery.
The quest of a northwest passage reminds one of the recent summer opening of a northwest passage north of Canada and the environmental worries about a what if - certainly any usage of the passage for commercial nature will only make matters worse for global warming related questions. The faster the arctic melts the sooner the vanishing of coastal cities and towns near and far, and some whole nations as well, low lying countries that is.

The beautiful village in Alps on the cover reminds one of the place we holidayed in Austria most recently, in the greater Salzburg area, where the residents were generally united in declaring they were closer to Munich than Vienna in spirit, and one did wonder if the residents of the then Austria felt this way when Germany marched in. Vienna is and has generally been proud of her own identity, what with the imperial past and having been larger in Europe than France and Germany, but Austria is now ambivalent about an identity post the German turmoil of last century.
That Austria had a hugely diverse population and the regime attempted to uniformise them but failed, is not a surprise - Europe, US, generally attempt to iron out any diversity of culture of residents, what with the "now you are here in this country you must speak this language", and variations thereof of behavioural rules and interpretational ones as well (as in "calling someone "son" is an insult in this country" which was conveyed on an internet site about an internet exchange of global scale about global issues) - but even so, Austria was more varied than most other nations of Europe, and the two couldn't survive together, the diversity and the uniformisation instinct. The consequent break up of Austria gave rise to a few new nations, just as another break up more recent added to the number.

Brilliant Flowering of Culture, Berlin in Weimar Era
It was said that Berlin was more, not less, cosmopolitan and brilliant, place for art and music and learning, high society and thinkers and intellectuals, for the brief time period after the first world war and before the beginning of nazi blot on the escutcheon of Germany. When the blot began most part of good German people waived it off as unimportant until it was too large to ignore and it took over, and those that still did not go with the wave and were not caught for that serious disagreement with the regime learned to be quiet and fear any servant or young child reporting on them.
Will those brilliant days ever return, some old Germans probably wistfully wonder - but not until the nazi seed is rooted out of the German and the world conscious and subconscious parts of psyche, and health is restored to consciousness.

I remember reading a statistic quoted by a British persona to the effect that the French had twenty million problems - this was before the second world war, French population was sixty million and Germans were eighty million in number, so the accounting was easy enough.

Land of fairy tales, so much so there is a scenic route specially designated so. And the forest creatures, the fairy tale characters, all come out between November and February, the time when theoretically Halloween is celebrated what with darkness of winter descending and spirits, creatures, demons coming out - official celebration is usually in February, a day variable through the country and fixed conveniently by every town independently. But through the four month dark period the creatures and spirits are visible in car toys, stickers, home decorations and various other manifestations.
The fairy tales were probably ancient legends from history before recording, now designated a lower position of children's stories or myths, but such power as they hold does not belong to the realm of imagination alone. Mickey Mouse is much loved in US but foxes in German, Rapunzel and so on, have a different power. Pigs dominate the place with appearances as toys, stickers, candy or other fun food forms. Germany might have been told to forget her pre Roman Gods, but forgetting lesser creatures was not imposed on the land and if it was it did not succeed at all.

The language teacher assigned us in Germany explained, or at least attempted to explain, the fear of strangers Germans seemed to pathologically have at a very primitive level in various ways.
This fear is experienced by various outsiders and quite a lot of born and brought up citizens who never lived anywhere else, too, when for example they are of Turkish ancestry. Commonly "no foreigners wanted" goes with half of advertisements openly enough in print along with houses or apartments for rent, roughly; the other half merely do not put it in print, but seldom are comfortable; and German friends are friends in US or other countries but not in Germany. And so forth.
This language teacher tried to claim it was because Germany never had an empire like the French and the British, but she knew this was untrue, Germany did have a definite presence in Africa before wwi. Then she talked of African-American US soldiers molesting German girls post wwii, and this we refuted vigorously, we could not imagine US military allowing this to happen in any way. Fact is German women were kept for use of German military in facilities and only women of Bangladesh before independence used by Pakistan military were in worse condition than the German young women kept for use of German military and other paramilitary males. This was apart from the young women used to breed a superior race by keeping them in a facility and breeding them with select high level nazis.
She of course knew all of this and could not be too certain we did not - we did, but did not think of throwing it back at her, it was far too unpleasant. So she came up with another reason.
It went back to the ancient history of Mongolian hordes attacking with Attila the Hun, she said, who were successful in Europe until the Germans fought back (how far they came into Germany is a good question, since the British refer to German as the Huns, and whether it is related to some racial remnant or merely a set of traits, some definitive characteristics shared, is anybody's guess) - which remained in German subconscious, she said.

When Catherine of Aragon was married to the heir to the English throne the hope, as usual in such marriages, was that the two kingdoms would unite or at least be on friendly terms, with peace and prosperity for both. With the untimely death of her husband, this hope seemed to end, and she was to return to her parents, but the English royals devised a way out of sending her away, by marrying her to the next heir, Henry the 8th, who was just about a teenager but precocious. This was against the English law which prevailed until a century ago (if it has been amended since Shaw wrote about it is rather irrelevant in this era except for the royals who need to be legitimate to inherit) so they asked for a special dispensation from the pope, with a declaration to the effect that Catherine's marriage with her first husband was never consummated. However, she did not have a son, while Henry did, and he finally was desperate to have a legitimate son, and grew to believe that he had sinned after all in marrying his brother's widow. The pope refused to cancel the annulment of her first marriage though or to grant another annulment, chiefly for the reason that Spain was too powerful now and besides Spain was closer and in a position to threaten the pope personally; besides, it was irksome to do a double annulment at England's behest, and be a far more ridiculous puppet of the royals of Europe, than digging heels in and refuse mulishly to please the English would be much marrying king.
Henry found a way out - seceding from the church of Rome, which had already happened in Germany with beginning and establishment of protestant church. The period that then followed in England until Elizabeth I came to power was filled with strife, intrigues, murders, plots, executions, threats, and much dark manipulation, which included Roman agents, priests secretly or openly arriving in England to turn back the tide. People were fed up with the strife by the time Elizabeth was the Queen, it is not for nothing Mary was called and is remembered as Bloody Mary with attempts to turn England back to Roman dominion. Hopes were pinned on Elizabeth, hopes for peace for people of England.
Elizabeth did achieve this and more, with Britain firmly established on path to prosperity and forging ahead, during her reign. She sacrificed a possibility of any personal life with happiness of motherhood by never marrying, and her first attempt to establish peace in realm of religion was by asking England to unite under one church for the nation, not aligned to either Rome or any protestant church abroad. Once this was granted she then refused to conform to either and much form of both was retained in the new church for comfort of people in devotion.
Rome refused to give up on power in Britain though and attempts on her life escalated with signed and sealed orders to murder her sent through priests from Rome travelling to England and attempts to restart civil wars, with much maligning of her person as well - nothing new, and not something that has stopped since either - and it took more than loyal subjects to deal with them, often with shrewd, wary and capable men of England helping her survive. The miraculous escapes she had, what with priests from Rome secretly crawling about the palace (with signed and sealed orders and weapons including daggers, ready to murder her and create havoc), were nothing short of Divine intervention on her behalf, and for the nation and the world.
Those emissaries of Rome with orders to murder a sovereign ruler for sake of reestablishment of power of Rome is what this book is about. To all those that equate the power of Rome with ultimate power above the title of the book is apt, but to all others it is nothing short of a parallel of jihadi tracts of today to demolish all powers not of Islamic nations, holding UK, US, India, Israel, Australia, Canada and other nations - especially those of Europe - as culpable and any propaganda against them claiming a torture of Muslim residents thereof as merely a valid weapon for the purpose of establishing kingdom of god.
England celebrates Guy Fawkes Day with fireworks officially - wonderful to enjoy especially when travelling on a dark night.

Story of Tibet: by Dalai Lama and Thomas Laird.
Work of several hours of interviews of the present Dalai Lama by Thomas Laird, about Tibet, history and religion, and related subjects.
The present Dalai Lama is impressive in his unassuming and friendly manner and a casual, easy demeanor retaining an inner persona of untold stature - whether this was a spiritual achievement early on or a persona that grew through all the travails of his land and people that he suffered along with them, perhaps those closer to him know better.
During a recent speech of his being telecast, one had this uncanny experience of the television channel telecasting the even suddenly going blank, and not recovering for several hours by which time the speech in its entirety was no longer telecast, although short excerpts were - but one never can know which part one would find something of value. This disturbance was obviously due to deliberate intervention by those that would silence all Tibet and especially Dalai Lama, by whatever means possible - Tibet has suffered an unrecognised genocide while US provided billions of dollars and arms to Pakistan to defeat Soviets in Afghanistan, with not a word of even condolences for the genocide of Tibetans through half a century of Chinese occupation.
The only other time I remember a similar television blackout in recent times is when in Germany once CNN was telecasting a program about German racist attacks on foreigners of the "wrong" colour, including one where a middle aged Indian man was beaten up by German youths and thrown on the train tracks with every intention that he should die there - German trains and so forth are extremely punctual to the fraction of a minute and the youth obviously knew about the timings, and it was a deserted site; only, luckily for the frail beaten up unconscious man lying on the tracks, someone discovered him before he was run over and his life was saved.
As I was listening to this, aghast, with more to come about the rest of the country, suddenly the television went blank, at least as far as CNN goes - it was the only English language channel allowed - and obviously the other channels, German, were not going to telecast any of this. CNN returned several hours later, with no repetition of this program.
So are the victims silenced by the bullies with shoutings, obfuscations, threats, and outright yanking of the television and other communication media, if not by threats or outright genocide.
The German teacher that was obviously on job to endoctrinate us misunderstood at first when I began the topic and blamed "a Jew with a big mouth" for foreigners getting the wrong idea about Germany, since he would not shut up about racist and anti semitic incidents in north Germany.
She gave up on us but not before I was given enough clues about what was going on. We were in effect surrounded by those that would keep watch, inform on us, and attempt to inculcate us with the required attitudes.
Others kept away, even friends of long standing. We gave up on them for good. They were friendly before we visited Germany, very. In their own land they dared not befriend foreigners of English speaking variety.
Fortunately some Tibetans have managed to escape such muzzling by managing to escape to India, and fortunately for the world the Dalai Lama is one of them.

Nag Hammadi Library: by James M. Robinson, Richard Smith.
The official blurb gives reasons to read this book, more than that, reasons why anyone caring about history and truth thereof would probably find this worth a read. -
"This revised, expanded, and updated edition of The Nag Hammadi Library is the only complete, one-volume, modern language version of the renowned library of fourth-century manuscripts discovered in Egypt in 1945. First published in 1978, The Nag Hammadi Library launched modern Gnostic studies and exposed a movement whose teachings are in many ways as relevant today as they were sixteen centuries ago. James M. Robinson's updated introduction reflects ten years of additional research and editorial and critical work. Gnosticism obviously was not all dead these sixteen centuries - shouldn't that be at least twenty, sixteen being the number of centuries it went underground while twenty being probably the real age of the documents in this? - For Yeats, Voltaire and co, not to mention others before them (Da Vinci?) were aware of the thought if not of the labels and of the Nag Hammadi location.
Indeed, while the libraries in Alexandria, Egypt and Spain were burned by inquisition and their predecessors of official Roman authorities wiping out all traces of thought and evidence and facts Rome had decided to banish for convenience, there had been scholars, Jewish and Arabic, who had kept various documents alive, which eventually found their way into establishing Paris as a centre of quest for knowledge and learning by passing Rome and authority in the interest of knowledge pure - and hence grew the university and science.
But on the other hand Rome did have and was granted monopoly of a sort over theology, in west at any rate, albeit by power of Rome over matters of politics as well as other realms, power abrogated by Rome to oneself, and this stranglehold of power of Rome could only break with discoveries of Nag Hammadi documents that not only were often new - whole gospels - but were contradictory to those authorised by Rome while the rest were presumed carefully obliterated, although this discovery fortunately proved the obliteration was not successful, fortunately for the quest for truth.
This being the volume that gives those of the discovered documents that were in Nag Hammadi, a major source, is probably worth a read.
Unless it is one of those regular efforts by authorities after all to obfuscate the truth again, as often shown on television information channels, with soothing voices and pooh-poohing of anything not authorised these last sixteen centuries.

Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimesion of American Racism; by James W. Loewen.
Anna, IL; Darien, CT; Cedar Key, FL ..... These are some of the names of Sundown Towns, where rule has been that no blacks (or other races for that matter) are allowed after sundown, especially after dark.
Whether the rules were laws or simply unwritten and acted on punctiliously nevertheless is rather unimportant, since the methods of execution included any and every means possible including fraud, lies, and use of legal and law enforcement authorities. Not without their fully willing cooperation, of course. No compunction about using harassment, race riots, even murder, to keep "other" people out.
So obviously a good many white neighborhoods and suburbs are the result not of accidental choices or even real estate prices, but instead it is due to deliberate practices of decades, centuries of racism and segregation, with thousands of all-white towns coming to be between 1890 and 1968, and the years mentioned are notable as in shortly after the end of post civil war occupation of the south when southern states regained their autonomy back to the sixties when civil rights movements took strength and Kennedy brothers were murdered amongs many others who died in fighting for the anti racist movements.
Many of these towns still continue to exist today - the last I heard of one was within less than a decade ago, a really posh suburb of southern California on the seashore that "sees to it" that blacks are kept out, whether as residents or casual passing by cars.
The other time I could have had a clue about this was when a few decades ago - again - in southern California, in a backwater university town, a student openly declared she would never live in Los Angeles, and it was only when she repeated it that I desultorily asked why, which is when she quite candidly said, without any thought to how it sounds, that it was because LA was full of blacks.
I remember distancing myself - and losing a relatively better paid job in a very short while, perhaps due to her reporting to those in authority of such matters in exchange for ensuring a better career for herself (the university was downright discriminatory when it came to women, and she could not get a professor to ask her a question when everyone was aware that she knew most answers better than her male classmates) that all in all I was clearly unsympathetic to the southern Cause (southern California is often more South than west, at that) and hence the authorities deciding I was undesirable after all, pretty much as my predecessor had been. Looks are not the all of it, one needs the right attitude as well to prosper in these places. If one can stand living there that is.

I remember distancing myself - and losing a relatively better paid job in a very short while, perhaps due to her reporting to those in authority of such matters in exchange for ensuring a better career for herself (the university was downright discriminatory when it came to women, and she could not get a professor to ask her a question when everyone was aware that she knew most answers better than her male classmates) that all in all I was clearly unsympathetic to the southern Cause (southern California is often more South than west, at that) and hence the authorities deciding I was undesirable after all, pretty much as my predecessor had been. Looks are not the all of it, one needs the right attitude as well to prosper in these places. If one can stand living there that is.

If they had ever found superior intelligence in races other than pale technicoloured ones, they would have abandoned it and buried it under a heap of abuse masquerading as criticism and concern for humanity, but they did not think of measuring intelligent people of sepia or monochromatic races - even though Hardy had indeed found a miraculous example amongst many of his compatriots right around then or a bit before.
So it was conveniently concluded that pale technicolour characteristics were superior in terms of inner characteristics of intelligence and more, quite wrongly, and the genocides happened.
It was not restricted to race of course - those that were deemed unfit were coercively sterilized ("Light In The Piazza" indirectly and gently, charmingly tells the story of such one girl), and laws enacted in 27 states in US that were racist and cruel, with sterilizations taking place even after Nuremberg trials when internationally the who thing was condemned. Master races attempted to be perfect to rule.
Now, over half a century later, with all the supposedly strong education these decades in Germany against nazi doctrine, nevertheless the mindset is only as changed as to allow people to hold virtues of perceiving reality secretly while heaping false abuse and accusations on races not technicolour, assuming everything German is superior while there is no real query or wish to know about any other culture than of Europe and a hostility if such queries are answered truthfully - since another culure might emerge obviously superior in less than a weekend worth of conversation.
So another system of abusing and threatening is adopted with manufactured faults of such other cultures pointed out and begins a very tiresome process of questioning those accusations for their worth. Sometimes though such a closet nazi would would descend to abusing another culture, faith, achievements, openly; that is easier to deal with, they are only a step away from racists pushing around people on train stations.

"On March 2 and 3, 1859, the largest auction of slaves in American history took place in Savannah, Georgia. More than 400 slaves were sold. On the first day of the auction, the skies darkened and torrential rain began falling. The rain continued throughout the two days, stopping only when the auction had ended. The simultaneity of the rain storm with the auction led to these two days being called " the weeping time." "
makes one wonder.
Surely it could not have been a coincidence, surely a supposedly devout nation - US does put "In God We Trust" on US currency - might have considered the possibility that this rain was not exactly a blessing or indifference from heavens, surely rain never had a connotation of happiness or relief attached to it for the immigrants from Europe that conducted the slavery, the sales, the auctions?
And did it occur to anyone to enquire with any religious figure of authority if this was a sign of disapproval from above? Or at the very least something to stop and ponder about?
When an innocent soul is hurt, a cry goes up and reaches directly all the way up, and does not go unnoticed - and this was a lot of innocent souls being tortured and humiliated for no fault of theirs.
Surely this much might have occurred to someone?
At any rate one might note that after a century or so of various slaves attempting to flee and a few rebellions, this day or days - March 2 and 3, 1859 in Savannah, Georgia - of the largest auction of slaves in US history when 400 slaves were auctioned, was not too long before the whole edifice of slavery and slaver states collapsed. Within less than two years, Confederacy had declared an independence, and in April 1861 war was declared. Within less than a decade the war was over, the slaves were emancipated, and southern owners went through a horrendous time of occupation for a while. The tide would turn around a couple of times, and it was not all that hunky dory for the freed slaves in all parts either, but still ...
