It's certainly a different experience, reading screenplay, very comparable to reading a play, but short of watching the film. Short, because one can't really see the performances, expressions or the scenery and more, but one gets a clue of how a director visualizes and brings to life a manuscript. 

If one has seen a film such as the last one here, one's afraid to read the screenplay, for memories of the pain are fresh. If one hasn't seen for example the first one, and one us aware of the beauty of the young artist, one wishes one could have seen it.

Even as one begins reading, one is glad one got this. This introduction is dated 1963, and Gajanan Jagirdar, this famous, celebrated persona of the Marathi film and literature life, is already saying here, proposing what we the then young began to see soon after, a new wave in Indian cinema with experiments, and films based in literature.

Often enough in these very worthy books in Marathi, typing mistakes left uncorrected in editing process spoil a reader's pleasure, but sometimes it goes further and leaves one completely puzzled. 

"‘ ... गुड अर्थ’, ‘इन्फॉर्मर’, ‘स्टेजकोच’ यांसारखे अमेरिकन चित्रपट, किंवा ‘देवदास’, ‘सपेरा’, ‘मुती’ यांसारखे हिंदी चित्रपट, अथवा ‘कुंकू’, ‘माणूस’, ‘शेजारी’, ‘पेडगावचे शहाणे’, ‘ऊनपाऊस’, ‘प्रपंच’ यासारखे उत्तमोत्तम मराठी चित्रपट आपण पाहिले तर त्यांच्या यशाचा फार मोठा वाटा त्यांच्या नाविन्यपूर्ण आणि हृदयस्पर्शी कथेकडे जातो, असे आपल्या ध्यानी येते. ... "

This must have been a timely film, but dowry murders began around this time after anti dowry law was passed, until the protests by women in 1980s woke up government into stricter treatment after such incidents.

Lovematches are no stranger to India, even in antiquity and in great epics venerated in reli6,including love marriages of Gods and Goddesses. Insistence on a financial status match is definitely a foreign element, while conversions creeds of invaders for over a millennium and half have sought to dismember influence of family and faith by tomtomming love, attacking Hindus as stickers to caste and to arranged matches, and more such false propaganda. 

But here in this screenplay, apart from various types, there seems to be a strange mistake by the author. 

" ... - द्रुपदाच्या कुठं मनांत होतं रुमिणी कृष्णाला द्यावी म्हणून? झालंच ना कृष्ण-रुमिणीचं लग्न?"

The mistake is evident. It couldn't have been a typo. How the author could make it, and why Noone else saw it git to edit and correct it, is a puzzle.

Seen in recent decades, this film was unforgettable, ven apart from the very necessary message, what with the excellent performances, especially that of the superlative artist Sulochana. 

"माळकरी : 

फिरत्या चाकावरती देसी 

मातीला आकार, 

विठ्ठला 

तू वेडा कुंभार॥ध्रु०॥ 

माती, पाणी, उजेड वारा, 

तूंच मिसळसी सर्व पसारा 

आभाळच मग ये आकारां 

तुझ्या घटांच्या उतरंडीला नसे अंत, ना पार ॥१॥ 

घटा घटांचें रूप आगळे 

प्रत्येकाचे दैव वेगळे 

तुझ्याविना तें कोणां न कळे 

मुखीं कुणाच्या पडतें लोणी, कुणा मुखीं अंगार ॥२॥ 

तूंच घडविसी, तूंच फोडिसी 

कुरवाळिसि तूं, तूंच ताडिसी

But there's immediately another, too - 

"चंपा : 

मी भीक मागणारी, दातार तूं उदार 

झोळींत टाकलासी कां शेवटीं नकार? ॥१॥ 

मज आंस आसऱ्याची 

अश्वासिलेंस तूंही 

‘हो’कार तोच आतां 

गर्जे कठोर ‘नाहीं’ 

कुरवाळुनी कशाला केलास हा प्रहार? ॥२॥ 

राजीव लोचनांच्या 

मी पिंजऱ्यांत होते 

डोळ्यांत भाव भोळा 

ओठांत गोड गीतें 

पाळीव पांखरांची केलीस कां शिकार? ॥३॥ 

आतां कुठें फिरूं मी 

पंखांत जोम नाहीं 

सारें दिलें तुला मी

It had begun with something that foretold the tenour and developed into thus heartbreaking tale - 

"(नुकताच सूर्योदय झाला आहे.) 

नारायण गिरी : 

"पोटापुरता पसा पाहिजे, नको पिकाया पोळी 

देणाऱ्याचे हात हजारो, दुबळी माझी झोळी...॥धृ.॥ 

हवाच तितुका पाडी पाऊस देवा वेळोवेळीं 

चोंची पुरता देवो दाणा, माय माऊली काळी 

एक वितीच्या भुकेस पुरतें, तळहाताची थाळी...॥१॥ 

महाल माड्या नकोत नाथा, माथ्यावर दे छाया 

गरजेपुरती देई वसनें, जनन कराया काया 

गोंठविणारा नको कडाका, नको उन्हाची होळी...॥२॥ 

सोसे तितुके देई याहुन हट्ट नसे गा माझा 

सौख्य देइ वा दु:ख ईश्वरा, रंक करी वा राजा 

अपुरेपणहि नलगे, नलगे, पस्तावाची पाळी...॥३॥"
