A simple, hardly educated woman who lives a life of drudgery around the times of Russian revolution, and through her caring for the young men who visit her house and are cared for by her comes to understand their concerns, and to become the mother of all of them in spirit - indeed, comes to represent the spirit of Mother Russia in her concern and her caring for her children.
